Happy International Doula Day!

Today, we're celebrating the amazing work that doulas do to support pregnant people and their partners during labour and birth.

Why Have a Doula?

Having a doula during childbirth has been shown to have a number of benefits. Studies have found that having a doula present during labor can result in shorter labor, reduced use of pain medication, and lower rates of interventions such as cesarean sections.

Doulas can also help reduce anxiety and fear surrounding childbirth, and provide emotional support for both the pregnant person and their partner.

In addition, doulas can provide education and information about the birthing process, as well as help create a birth plan that aligns with the parents' wishes and values.

If you're considering hiring a doula, here are some questions you can ask to find the right one for you: What's your training and experience as a doula? You want to work with someone who's knowledgeable and experienced in providing emotional, physical, and informational support during labour and birth. Ask about their training, certification, and the number of births they've attended. What's your philosophy around birth? Every doula has their own approach to supporting their clients during labour and birth. Ask about their philosophy around birth, and see if it aligns with your own values and preferences.

What types of support do you offer during labour and birth? From massage and breathing techniques to position changes and advocacy, doulas offer a wide range of support during labour and birth. Find out what types of support they offer, and see if they align with your own needs and preferences. How do you involve partners in the birthing process? If you have a partner, it's important to find a doula who can work effectively with both of you. Ask about their approach to involving partners in the birthing process, and see if it aligns with your own preferences. What's your fee, and is it within my budget?

While you don't want to choose a doula solely based on price, it's important to find one whose fees are within your budget. Ask about their fee structure, whether they offer payment plans, and what services are included in the fee. How do you help clients who may require medical interventions during labour? While every birth is different, some clients may require medical interventions such as pain medication, induction, or cesarean birth. Ask about their experience working with clients who require medical interventions, and how they can support you in making informed decisions around your care.

By asking these questions, you can get a better sense of whether a doula is a good fit for you and your needs. Remember, the right doula can make all the difference in having a positive and empowering birth experience.
